RESP Calculator

A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a tax-deferred account that helps you save for a child's post-secondary education. Contributions grow tax-free, and the Government of Canada (and some provinces) adds grants to your savings — making an RESP one of the most effective ways to fund future education costs.

How the grants work

  • Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG): 20% of contributions each year (up to $500 on the first $2,500). Unused grant room carries forward — up to $1,000 of grants in a single year — to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child. Available until the end of the year the child turns 17 (with special rules at ages 16–17).
  • Additional CESG (A-CESG): Extra 20% on the first $500 for families with net income ≤ $58,523 (max $100/yr), or 10% (max $50/yr) for income ≤ $117,045 (2026 thresholds, indexed yearly). No carry-forward. Counts toward the $7,200 limit.
  • Canada Learning Bond (CLB): For eligible low-income families — $500 in the first year (if the child is 15 or younger) plus $100 each following year up to age 15, to a lifetime maximum of $2,000. No contributions required.
  • Quebec Education Savings Incentive (QESI): Quebec residents — 10% of contributions (up to $250 on the first $2,500), with carry-forward up to $500/yr, to a lifetime maximum of $3,600. Extra 10% (low income) or 5% (mid income) on the first $500 each year.
  • BC Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG): British Columbia residents — a one-time $1,200 grant applied once between the child's 6th and 9th birthday (ages 6–8). Must apply before age 9.
  • Other provinces: No provincial RESP grant is currently available. Saskatchewan (SAGES) has been suspended since 2018 and Alberta (ACES) ended in 2015.

This calculator is for illustration only and is not financial advice. Results are estimates based on the information you enter, a constant rate of return, and government grant rules as of 2026, which can change. Grants and bonuses are subject to eligibility requirements set by the Government of Canada and provincial governments. Investment returns are not guaranteed. Speak with a licensed advisor before making decisions.

Simplifying assumption: contributions and grants are deposited at the start of each year and compound once a year.
